Hot Topics promises “every new breakthrough”

If you want to keep abreast of the latest developments in medications, therapies, and important issues in the specialty, “Hot Topics in Medical Dermatology” (S001) is a must. This popular session is designed to provide everything you need to know about what’s hot in dermatology right now, from the latest breakthroughs to the newest drugs.

“One of the things that has clearly happened in the last few years is that medications are being introduced that dramatically change what we do,” said Mark Lebwohl, MD, the moderator of the session. “And they are being introduced at a faster and faster pace.”

A session like this one helps keep attendees up to date in areas that affect anyone who sees patients, he said.

“It’s going to cover the broad range of dermatology and cover every new breakthrough that’s being introduced. And there are many.”

Mark Lebwohl, MD

One new item of note is the continued success of biologics in treating conditions such as psoriasis, psoriatic arthritis, and atopic dermatitis. Dr. Lebwohl said drugs that block IL-23, IL-17, IL-13, and IL-4 have all contributed to dramatic success in treating these diseases, and new ones are on the horizon.

Other hot topics to be covered include:

  • The bigger role of genetic tests in predicting the likelihood of metastasis of melanomas
  • The rampant expansion of syphilis in the United States
  • New products in topical therapy
  • Disorders that have been plaguing travelers, including Zika, Chikungunya, and dengue fever
  • The management of difficult conditions, such as toxic epidermal necrolysis and Stevens-Johnson syndrome
  • New vaccines, including HPV and herpes zoster

The session will be held from 9 a.m.-12 p.m., Thursday, July 26, in Grand Ballroom EF.
