Hands-on sessions return to Summer Meeting

Hands-on: The Patient Encounter is a series of sessions that includes working one-on-one with patient-actors and getting feedback on the interaction.

Hands-on sessions are back! These popular, interactive workshops allow attendees to engage in individual or small group activities that focus on key facets of dermatologic care. Enhance your communication skills with patients in the Hands-on: The Patient Encounter sessions by participating in one-on-one simulated clinical encounters, or sharpen your procedural skills by practicing advanced techniques on cutaneous models related to nail surgery, filler injections, and scar/wound repair.

Hands-on sessions available at the Summer Meeting:

  • Hands-on: Practical Anatomy for Safe Filler Injections (W002): Attendees will participate in small-group, hands-on injection practice with cutaneous procedural head models that demonstrate placement of fillers via translucent simulated skin. A focus on anatomy will be covered as it relates to injectables, approaches to patient assessment, treatment planning, filler selection, and cannula versus needle use.
  • Hands-on: Scar Revision and Wound Repair (W003): This didactic session will review key elements of scar assessment, optimal design, and execution of surgical revision for free margin distortion, webbing, contracture, and hypertrophic scars. Participants will have ample opportunity for realistic hands-on practice with cadaveric arms and heads.
  • Hands-on: Nail Surgery (W004): In a small-group, hands-on setting, participants will be instructed on how to avulse the nail in several fashions (partial and complete), perform multiple nail procedures (including punch, shave, longitudinal techniques), treat nail melanoma with en bloc excision of all nail tissues, and perform nail flaps.
  • Hands-on: The Patient Encounter: Breaking Bad News: The purpose of these sessions, which will be presented multiple times during the Summer Meeting, is to get hands-on practice with delivering bad news and get feedback on the attendee’s counseling and communication skills. This is a rare opportunity to practice challenging conversations in a safe and realistic setting, and reflect on the encounter to identify areas for individualized improvement.
  • Hands-on: The Patient Encounter: The Difficult Patient: These sessions, which will be presented multiple times during the Summer Meeting, will include one-on-one simulated clinical encounters with an actor-patient in which the attendee will face “the difficult patient” — i.e. a patient who presents to the clinic with many demands and requests.
  • Hands-on: The Patient Encounter: Medication Management: These sessions, which will be presented multiple times during the Summer Meeting, will include one-on-one simulated clinical encounters with an actor-patient in which the attendee will counsel a standardized patient on medication management.
  • Hands-on: The Patient Encounter: Total Body Skin Exam: These sessions, which will be presented multiple times during the Summer Meeting, will include one-on-one simulated clinical encounters with an actor-patient in which the attendee will perform a full body skin exam. The purpose is to get hands-on practice with performing a routine office exam and obtain feedback on bedside manner and physical exam skills, including gowning/draping and counseling capabilities.
